On a humid Wednesday evening at the Mason Activity Center, the Highlanders took to the court looking to get back on track against the University of Valley Forge.
Â
SET ONE
The Highlanders looked sharp early on, vaulting out to a 10-5 lead early, forcing Valley Forge to burn their first timeout in order to halt the Highlanders momentum. Â However, the timeout was to no avail, as the Highlanders attack proved to be too much in the first set, leading to a 25-9 victory. Lyntia Gwess and Haley Sheehan led the way with 5 kills a piece and were each incredibly efficient, with Sheehan notching a .444 hitting percentage, and Gwess putting up a .333 hitting percentage herself.
Â
SET TWO
The second set was close to an exact replica of the first one, with the Highlanders again setting the tempo early, getting out to a 10-4 lead, that was capped off by a thunderous kill from Gwess. Â The Highlanders kept the momentum going when Haley Sheehan notched her ninth kill of the match to extend the Highlander lead to 20-8 nearing the end of the second set. With the set nearly locked up for the Highlanders, the Patriots came roaring back, scoring the next 8 points to cut deeply into the Highlander lead which now stood at 20-16. Â Fortunately for Head Coach Whitney Seidel, the Highlanders were able to fend off the late Patriot push, winning the set by a score of 25-20, highlighted by a surprise kill by setter Liz White.
Â
SET THREE
With all eyes on setter Liz White, who nudged ever closer to her 1,000th assist, the Highlanders got off to a quick start courtesy of a couple kills from freshman middle Allison Barnes. With the score set at 16-6 midway through the third set, history was made when the junior White dished out her 29th assist of the night, a kill from Brooke Seidel, and picked up her 1,000th assist as a Highlander. Â The game was halted as White became the third setter in Highlanders women's volleyball history to achieve this incredible milestone. With celebration in the air, the Highlanders used this momentum to finish off the final set, to win the third set 25-11, and the match 3-0.
Â
WRAP UP
With the victory, the Highlanders improve to 3-7 on the season. Â As mentioned previously, Liz White notched 34 assists in the victory to take her above the 1,000 assist mark for her career. Â Lyntia Gwess lead the way with 15 kills, Haley Sheehan was right behind with 11 kills of her own, and Brie Norton picked up 4 kills as well to contribute to the Highlander effort.
