LANGHORNE, PA- In their second CSAC doubleheader of the season the Highlanders were narrowly defeated in both games by the visiting Giants of Keystone College.
Â
Game one passed without much drama as both Cairn and Keystone were buoyed by their aces. Both Krista Earl and Keystone pitcher Alyssa Hughes mowed through the opposing lineup, with Earl allowing only 5 hits and Hughes limiting the Highlanders to 3. The Highlanders' threatened to break the shutout in the bottom of the first when Sony MacBain singled and stole second base, Haley Tinney walked, and Meagan Maratita bunted to advance both runners. With runners on second and third and only one out, the Highlanders were unable to score as back-to-back strikeouts ended Cairn's chances. Earl helped her own chances with two hits, including a double, but the Highlanders were unable to knock her home and Cairn dropped the first contest, 2-0.
Â
The second game started similarly to the first, as staked to a 2-0 deficit the Highlanders threatened early when Sony MacBain generated some instant offense with her speed on the basepaths. MacBain walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a Hailey Tinney groundout. When a pitch slipped past the Keystone catcher, MacBain bolted home for Cairn's first run of the day. With the score sitting at 2-1, the Highlanders battled back. MacBain and Tinney singled, Maratita bunted them to third, but, redeeming their earlier strikeouts in game 1, Katelyn Reiss hit a sac fly, and McKenna Schindele smacked a double down the left field line to plate both leadoff runners. Leading 3-2, the Giants were able to tie the game in the bottom of the 7
th with a three singles, before back-to-back doubles gave the Giants the lead in the top of the 8
th. Haley Tinney singled to keep the Highlanders alive, but their hopes were quickly dashed when Meagan Maratita stung a line drive to third that was caught and relayed to first, doubling off Tinney and effectively ending Cairn's chances. Haley Tinney and Krista Earl each tallied two hits to lead the Highlanders offense.
