CLARKS SUMMIT, PA- The Highlanders took the long trip north last night, facing off against the Clarks Summit University Defenders. In an evenly matched contest, the Highlanders fell in four sets after some very spirited play from both teams.
The first set began exactly according to plan as the Highlanders
Liz White dished up a number of assists to
Haley Sheehan,
Allison Barnes, and
Lyntia Gwess. The Highlanders garnered a 17-8 lead after the offensivel flurry, and coasted to the first set victory 25-20. The second set seemed to be following suit with Cairn leading 8-4, until the Defenders Beth Muhlenkamp found her rhythm in front of the home crowd, leading Clarks Summit on an 8-1 run to retake the lead. Trailing 23-17, the Highlanders quickly built momentum with kills from
Brooke Seidel, Sheehan, and
Brie Norton, and showed great grit to come within one point. Unfortunately, the comeback attempt was thwarted at the last point and Clarks Summit took the second set 25-23 to bring the match even. The Defenders used their momentum to take the third set 25-13 and a 2-1 lead. In the fourth, Clarks Summit took a huge lead, but the Highlanders, forever scrappy, battled back bringing the score as close as three points in the late stages. However, the comeback could not be completed and the Highlanders dropped the match 3-1.
The Highlanders will play their senior night match this Saturday against Notre Dame (MD) at 12:00 PM and honor the excellent careers of
Haley Sheehan and
Brooke Seidel.
