Langhorne, PA - On Thursday afternoon the Cairn softball team returned to action with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting York Cardinals by scores of 8-0 and 9-1 in run-shortened games. In the circle,
Meagan Maratita picked up both wins for the Highlanders to improve to 6-1 on the season. The freshman hurler gave up just three hits on the afternoon across 11 innings.
At the dish,
Katelynn Reiss had her two strongest games of the season with a 5-7 effort with seven RBI and two home runs.
Game One - Cairn defeats York 8-0
As mentioned the Highlanders used strong pitching from
Meagan Maratita to claim both games. Maratita started off strong tossing a two-hit shutout in Game One. York collected two-out hits in the first and fourth, but could not do anything with them stranding runners in both frames.
After a scoreless first inning, the Highlanders jumped on the board with three runs in the second.
Keely Congleton chased home two runs with a single through the right-side and later in the inning
Vanessa Munoz reached on an error allowing a run to score from second.
The Highlanders jumped right back on the board with three more runs in the bottom of the third. Reiss doubled home
Jessica Rolo after Rolo reached on a single moments before. Cairn also scored on an errant throw on a stolen base attempt and a Congleton groundout to shortstop.
In the bottom of the fourth Reiss added some insurance with a two-run homer to left-field to push the Cairn lead to 8-0.
In the top of the fifth, Maratita got the Cardinals one-two-three on a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to end the game thanks to the softball run rule.
Reiss went 3-3 in the gam with a double, a home run, and three RBI to lead the Highlanders at the dish.
Game Two - Cairn defeats York 9-1
In Game Two the Highlanders took advantage of 11 walks handed out by Cardinals' pitcher, Dorianny Rojas over 5.2 innings to earn the 9-1 victory. Once again the game was shortened due to the run rule.
Jenna Alshay walked with the sacks full in the bottom of the sixth to push across the run that put the Highlanders up eight and end the game.
Katelynn Reiss collected two hits for the Highlanders in the game with both hits resulting in two RBI a piece. Reiss doubled to left center in the third to score two and then singled down the left field line to score two more in the sixth.
Meagan Maratita doubled down the line in left to lead off the third before scoring on Reiss' double and
Vanessa Munoz singled to right center to lead off the sixth for Cairn's only other hits in the game.
In the circle, Maratita tossed six innings allowing one run (unearned) on just one hit. She struck out four and walked one to earn her sixth victory of the season.
The Highlanders will be back action Saturday afternoon as they continue conference play at Neumann University. Their doubleheader with the Knights is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
