Allentown, PA - On the final day of the 2016-17 season, the Cairn women's basketball team earned their biggest victory of the season with a 78-43 win over Cedar Crest. The Highlanders jumped out to an early 22-16 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back cruising to the 35-point victory.
Kendra Stum led five double-digit scorers for the Highlanders with 22 points on the afternoon.
Payton Emerick collected the game's only double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
As mentioned, the Highlanders started off with the hot hand early in the contest. Cairn put together their best quarter of the afternoon in the first when they outscored the Falcons 22-6. Cairn started the game on a 9-0 run thanks to buckets from three different players including five points from
Kendra Stum.
Later in the quarter with Cairn leading 13-6, the Highlanders bookended the stanza with another 9-0 run to take a 22-6 lead heading into the second quarter.
Kendra Stum led the way for Cairn with nine points in the opening 10 minutes.
The second quarter was much more even, but the Highlanders used an 8-0 over the final 1:42 to take their largest lead of the half heading into the break.
EJ Hartzler led the way on the run with a pair of threes off assists from
Payton Emerick and
Amy Faust.
Charlotte Camp connected on a jumper between Hartzler's threes to round out the run and help give Cairn the 36-16 lead at the half.
Cairn steadily grew their lead over the course of the third quarter, expanding the 20-point advantage at the break to 30 points heading into the final quarter.
Kendra Stum dropped 11 points in the third quarter alone, matching the 11 points that the Falcons scored as a team.
In the fourth quarter Cairn continued to push. The Highlanders lead by as many as 40 points at 76-36 with 3:13 remaining in the game after an
Aigner Bookard free throw. With the tenth victory of the season in hand, head coach
Walt Zamroz worked all 12 available players into the game.
Cedar Crest ended the game on a 7-2 run, but the Highlanders emerged with the 78-43 victory.
With the win the Highlanders finish the season with a 6-10 record in the CSAC and an overall 10-15 record. With 10 wins on the season, the Highlanders have claimed their first season with double-digits wins since the 2007-2008 season, when they won 14 games.
