Slow Second-Half Leads to Loss For Highlanders

Langhorne, PA - The Cairn women's basketball team struggled to take care of the ball on Monday evening and turned in their worst shooting night of the season in a 57-33 loss against The City College of New York. The Highlanders shot 23.1% from the field and scored 11 points after half-time in the loss to the Beavers.

EJ Hartzler led the Highlanders with nine points off the bench. Madelyn Brodish and Payton Emerick led the Highlanders on the glass with 12 and 10 rebounds respectively to lead the Highlanders.

The game was competitive throughout the majority of the first-half. The Highlanders held a four-point lead midway through the first quarter after Madelyn Brodish made a layup. Brodish's layup made it 10-6 with 4:41 remaining in the quarter. After the layup the Beavers went on a 9-0 run to end the quarter. Four different Beavers scored on the run and The City College of New York led 15-10 heading to the second quarter.

At the start of the second quarter the Highlanders quickly cut the lead to three points on two occasions, but the Beavers grew their lead to as many as eight points midway through the period. The Highlanders cut that lead down to five with a pair of free throws from Aigner Bookard to push the score to 27-22. The Beavers beat the buzzer with a layup from Shakirra Smith to take a 29-22 lead heading into the break.

The Beavers opened the second-half with a three from Debra Chan to push the lead to 10 points and the Beavers never looked back. The City College of New York grew their lead to as many as 17 in the third quarter and held a 40-27 lead heading to fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Beavers. The City College of New York won the quarter 17-6 and steadily grew their lead throughout the quarter. When the dust settled, the Beavers took down the Highlanders 57-33. With a 24-point winning margin, the Beavers held their largest lead of the game at the end of the contest.

As mentioned the Highlanders shot a season-low 23.1% from the floor. Cairn also turned the ball over 28 times, tied for the most in a single-game this season.

With the loss the Highlanders fell to 4-9 on the season and will next take the court on Wednesday when they host Cabrini on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
