Langhorne, PA - The Cairn Highlanders opened their 2016 home slate with a 5-4 victory over the visiting Nittany Lions from Penn State - Abington. The Highlanders held a 2-1 lead after doubles play before splitting the six singles matches 3-3 to come away with the 5-4 victory.
 
The Highlanders opened strong taking the number three doubles match in convincing fashion. The team of Kara Williams and Maya Neal took down their Penn State – Abington opponents 8-1. While the Nittany Lions made quick work of the Highlanders in the number two singles match (8-0) the top singles match was the match of the afternoon. In a closely contested battle the Highlanders' team of Bianca Birney and Rebecca Graber prevailed 8-5 and Cairn grabbed the early 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
 
As mentioned the Highlanders and Nittany Lions split the six singles matches with the Highlanders taking the number one, five, and six matches while Penn State – Abington took the two through four matches.
 
Rebecca Graber downed Honora Hegarty 6-0, 6-4 to improve to 29-7 in her singles career at Cairn playing all 36 matches in the number one slot. Ricki White took the number five singles match by a 6-4, 6-2 final and Angela James defeated Duyen Hy 6-1, 6-4 for the Highlanders final victory.
 
Cairn was competitive in the singles matches that they dropped, picking up 13 games across the other six sets.
 
The Highlanders will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Delaware Valley tomorrow afternoon for a 12:00 p.m. match against the Aggies
