Chambersburg, PA - On Wednesday night the Cairn women's basketball team defeated the Wilson Phoenix 77-65 in a non-conference match. Cairn held a 38-29 lead at the break but Wilson closed the gap to just a single point in the third quarter before the Highlanders went on for the 12-point victory.
Charlotte Camp led Cairn with 21 points in the contest. Camp also added 13 rebounds for her second-straight double-double. Joining Camp with 17-plus points were
Kendra Stum (19 points) and
Aigner Bookard (17).
EJ Hartzler chipped in nine points with a 3-9 mark from downtown and
Madelyn Brodish grabbed 14 rebounds in the victory.
The Highlanders fell into an early hole in the contest. Wilson scored the game's first five points with a three on their first possession and a jumper just two trips down the floor later. Cairn dented the scoreboard with a jumper by
Madelyn Brodish after she grabbed an offensive rebound almost three minutes into the game.
A pair of threes for Wilson were sandwiched around a jumper by
Kendra Stum and gave the Phoenix an 11-4 lead four minutes into the game.
EJ Hartzler then hit a three to start a 14-2 run for Cairn that spanned two minutes and change to give Cairn their first lead of the game.
At the end of the first-quarter the Highlanders led 20-18.
Cairn controlled the second quarter with scoring production from five different players. Hartzler started the quarter with a three and the Highlanders extended their lead to as many as 12 points at 36-24 with 1:37 left in the half. After 20 minute the Highlanders led 38-29 after a jumper by Wilson's Jordyn Day ended the half.
After the break, Wilson played the first portion of the third-quarter much closer to the Highlanders than they did in the first-half. The Phoenix closed the gap to just a single point after Jordyn Day hit a pair of triples, four minutes into the quarter. Now leading 44-43, the Highlanders countered the Wilson run by scoring eight of the next 10 points to take a seven-point lead.
Cairn led by five entering the fourth quarter and played their strongest quarter of the night to put away the Phoenix. The Highlanders scored 25, fourth-quarter points and won the quarter 25-18 and defeated Wilson 77-65.
The Highlanders had three players with double-digit points in the second-half alone.
Kendra Stum led all scorers in the final 20 minutes with 13 points and a 9-10 mark from the free-throw line.
The win improves the Highlanders to 3-3 on the season. The Highlanders will now take off for the next three weeks before taking the floor at Medgar Evers on Dec. 30 at 3:00 p.m.
