Highlanders Falter in 2016-17 Season Opener

Langhorne, PA - The Cairn women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a 64-40 loss against Penn State - Hazleton. The Lady Lions pulled away in the second quarter when they outscored the Highlanders 23-5 in the quarter. Charlotte Camp and Payton Emerick each scored 10 points on the evening to led the way for the Highlanders.

Kendra Stum grabbed 11 rebounds and added six points in the loss.

The Highlanders struggled to get the offense going in the opening minutes. The Lady Lions opened up a 11-4 lead after Cairn went 2-14 from the field over the first seven minutes of the game. In the final three minutes of the half the Highlanders went 2-4 from the field with Emerick making three free throws and scoring a total of five points to bring Cairn within two at 13-11.

The stronger play at the end of the first quarter did not continue into the rest of the first-half for the Highlanders. The Lady Lions won the quarter 23-5 and took a 20-point lead into halftime.

Immediately following the break, the Highlanders turned in their best quarter of the contest. Cairn outscored Hazleton 10-8 in the period with four of the Highlanders' points coming from the charity stripe. Camp did connect on a pair of jumpers early in the quarter and Aigner Bookard put through a bucket midway through the quarter.

After shaving the lead down to 18 points heading into the fourth quarter, the Lady Lions outscored the Highlanders by six, 20-14, in the final quarter and took a 64-40 victory. In a two minute stretch midway through the quarter, the Highlanders scored 10 points Emerick and Camp each scored four and Kendra Stum hit a jumper with 6:16 remaining in regulation.

Kendra Stum's bucket would be the last points until her sister, Victoria Stum, scored four points in the final minute of play thanks to a jumper and a pair of free throws.

Both teams struggled mightily from three-point-land, the Highlanders went 1-12 (8.3%) from downtown while the Lady Lions were even worse at 1-13 (7.7%).

The Highlanders shot just 24.1% from the field (15-61).

The Lady Lions took advantage of 28 Cairn turnovers scoring 27 points off turnovers while the Highlanders scored just 12 points on 12 Hazleton turnovers.

The loss drops the Highlanders to 0-1 on the season. Cairn will look to rebound on Thursday night when they open their home slate with a game against Bryn Mawr at 6:00p.m.
