Softball Ends Season With Two Wins At Baptist Bible

Clarks Summit, PA – Cairn University finished their 2015 season this afternoon with two convincing wins at Baptist Bible College, 12-3 and 11-2. The wins bring the Highlanders to 7-29 overall and 7-15 in the CSAC this year. Kelly Hendrickson pitched both games for Cairn and allowed just two earned runs in total.

Although the Highlanders won by nine runs in both games, it was not smooth sailing in the first game. Baptist Bible started out with the lead in the first inning by scoring two runs. Cairn cut the deficit to one in the second inning and then took the lead 3-2 in the third inning. The Defenders came back to tie though in the fourth inning.

However, Cairn found their bats in the fifth inning and scored four runs to go up 7-3. Jessica Good scored on a groundout and Jocelyn Good scored on a single by Brigid Shehan. Hannah Blackmer then hit a double to left field to score the final two runs of the inning.

The Highlanders added to their score in the sixth inning when they brought home five runs on four hits and three errors. Jessica Good and Brigid Shehan led the team with three hits each; Shehan had two RBI and two runs scored while Good had three runs scored.

Hendrickson pitched all six innings with two strikeouts and two earned runs. The senior also had three RBI from the plate. With no earned runs in the second game, Hendrickson lowered her season ERA to 8.54.

Where Cairn had a rocky start in game one, the Highlanders came out firing on all cylinders in game two. Cairn scored four runs in the top of the second inning and added seven more in the top of the third. Brigid Shehan opened things up with a solo homerun in the top of the second for her fourth of the season.

Jocelyn Good led the team with two hits, four RBI, and one run scored in game two. Eight other Highlanders collected one hit in the game. Furthermore, four Highlanders had two runs scored in game two. Hannah Blackmer collected the only double in game two, which brings her season total to five.

With the wins, Cairn finishes their season by winning seven of their last ten, all of which were conference games. Despite having a better overall record last season, the Highlanders had just one less conference win this season than in 2014.

The Highlanders have five seniors graduating this spring, which means their team will look a little different next year. However, Cairn will try build off of their younger players and return even stronger in 2016.
