Langhorne, PA – Cairn University women's basketball won their first game of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 66-35 victory over Cedar Crest College. The Highlanders had two players with double-doubles in the game in
Payton Emerick (15 rbs, 14 pts) and
Aigner Bookard (11 rbs, 13 pts).
Today's game marked the first win for the Highlanders since November of 2014. This was also the first conference win for Cairn since they defeated Notre Dame of Maryland in January of 2014.
"It feels good and I'm really happy for the girls," said head coach
Walt Zamroz after the game. "They work just as hard as anybody and that hard work put them in a position to beat a team that they are competitive with."
Amie Eppolito led all players in the game with 23 points; 18 of which came from three-point range.
Devon Rink played well off the bench for the Highlanders with eight points and six rebounds. Emerick was the most efficient Highlander with her 50% field goal percentage.
The Highlanders took the first lead of the game and didn't give it up throughout all four quarters. Cairn hit their stride early in the second quarter with a 14-0 run to go up 22-5. Cedar Crest cut the deficit back to nine after that run but that was as close as they would come from there.
"We have just been working on some foundational things," continued coach Zamroz. "We focused on playing good defense and executing well offensively, which are things that will put us in a position to win some games."
Cairn picked up the advantage over Cedar Crest in points off turnovers (25-6) and points in the paint (20-10). Cedar Crest was led by Taylor Osley with 13 points, followed by Tenille Stewart and Rianna Kinard with nine each.
With the win, Cairn improved to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Cedar Crest remains winless with a 0-9 overall record and 0-2 conference record. The Highlanders will next take a break from action until they travel to Florida for the Keiser University Classic from Dec. 31-Jan. 2.
