Abington, PA – Cairn University women's basketball suffered their fourth loss of the season in an 80-32 result at Penn State Abington on Monday evening. The Highlanders went behind early on and never got their feet back under them in the non-conference game against the Nittany Lions.
Amie Eppolito (Levittown, PA) and
Aigner Bookard (Philadelphia, PA) tied for the team-lead in points with 14; Bookard led the team in rebounds with seven. Unfortunately only four other points were scored by Cairn throughout the game as they shot 25% overall from the field.
For Penn State Abington, Janaiah Elum led the team with 27 points, four rebounds, and five assists. Madison Kimball finished with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Elizabeth Jones had 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
The Nittany Lions scored the first nine points of the game and finished the first quarter with a 22-7 lead. By the end of the first half, Abington held a 32-point lead at 46-14. The Nittany Lions' defense was able to limit the number of shots for the Highlanders to just 24 for the first half.
The lopsided score was due, in part, by the 25 turnovers committed by Cairn throughout the game. The Nittany Lions scored 23 points off of those turnovers. Cairn scored just three points in the third quarter but finished out the final quarter with 15 points.
With the loss, Cairn dropped to 0-4 on the season, while Abington improved to 2-0 on the year. The Highlanders will play their next game after the Thanksgiving break when they host Neumann University on Dec. 2 to open conference play.
