Langhorne, PA – The Cairn women's tennis team hosted Gwynedd Mercy University on Monday afternoon where they fell to the Griffins 8-1. The Highlanders suffered a loss by the same score to the Griffins in 2014.
 
Also similar to last season, Rebecca Graber won Cairn's only point in today's match in her singles match. The sophomore defeated Taylor Michener 6-3, 6-2; a bigger advantage than last year's defeat of Michener, which went 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7).
 
Gwynedd Mercy made quick work of the Highlanders in nearly every other match on the court. The Griffins won all three doubles matches and defeated the Highlanders in short time in the no. 2, 3, 4, and 6 singles matches.
 
For Julia Derus, it was just her second loss of the season in the no. 2 spot. Freshman Katie Garthaus looked impressive for Gwynedd in the shutout defeat of Derus; Cairn's strong no. 2 player.
 
Samantha Shroyer played well for the Highlanders in the no. 5 singles spot but also faced a tough opponent in Jenna Caffarello. Shroyer dropped the first set 6-4 but came back in the second set and led 5-4. Caffarello then won the next three games to take the second set 7-5.
 
With the loss, Cairn fell to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Gwynedd Mercy improved to 8-1 on the season and 5-0 in the CSAC. The Highlanders will next travel to Stockton University on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to take on the Ospreys.
