Immaculata, PA – Cairn women's tennis fell to 4-6 in the conference on Saturday afternoon after a 7-2 loss at Immaculata University. The Highlanders' two points came from two singles wins in the no. 1 and no. 2 spots by
Rebecca Graber (Atglen, PA/Octorara) and
Julia Derus (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township H.S.).
Graber faced what was most likely her toughest CSAC opponent of the season in her singles matchup against Lauren Degnan. The sophomore lost the first set 6-2 but came back to win the second set 6-3. Graber then pulled out the win in the third-set tiebreaker 10-7. Graber remains undefeated in singles conference play this season with the win.
Derus breezed through her singles matchup with Nicole Burley and won 6-1, 6-1. Graber and Derus went into a tiebreaker in their doubles match with Degnan and Kelly Gross but fell 9-8 (10-8).
Samantha Shroyer (Dawsonville, GA) gave Jenna Fratterelli and run in the first set of her singles match but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-3. The only other Highlander to win more than two games in a set was
Lauren Caruso (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson), who lost 6-0, 6-3 in her match.
With the loss, the Highlanders fell to 5-9 overall and 4-6 in the CSAC. The Mighty Macs improved to 11-3 overall and 8-2 in the conference with the win. The match concluded the Highlanders 2015 season as they did not win enough matches to make playoffs this season. Cairn is still expected to play non-conference Eastern University this fall if the game can be rescheduled.
