Langhorne, PA – Cairn University women's tennis dropped a 6-3 contest to Notre Dame of Maryland University on Thursday evening in conference action. The match marked the final home game of the season for the Highlanders and was a postponement from Oct. 3.
The Highlanders won one out of the three doubles matches and two out of the six singles matches for their three points. One singles match unfortunately went to Notre Dame because of an injury.
Rebecca Graber (Atglen, PA/Octorara) and
Julia Derus (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township H.S.) shutout Liz Tran and Paola Castillo Assaf in their no. 1 doubles match 8-0.
Sara Keating (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) and
Lauren Caruso (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) then lost their no. 2 doubles match to Carrie Naylor and Natalie Smith 8-1. Sandy Vo and Kaitlyn Sommer defeated
Samantha Shroyer (Dawsonville, GA) and
Ricki White () 8-4 in the no. 3 doubles.
Graber and Derus continued their strong play in their singles matches and they both won with scored of 6-0, 6-2 over Tran and Castillo Assaf. Naylor defeated Caruso (6-2, 6-0) at no. 3 singles and Sommer defeated White (6-1, 6-0) at no. 6 singles.
The final singles match went into the darkness under the lights as Shroyer took Vo into a third set. Vo won the first set 6-4 but Shroyer came back to win the second set 6-3. Vo then out lasted Shroyer in the final 10-point tiebreaker 13-11.
With the loss, Cairn fell to 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference. Notre Dame improved to 6-5 overall and 4-5 in the conference with the win. The Highlanders will next travel to Neumann University tomorrow, Oct. 16, to take on the Knights at 4 p.m.
