Box ScoreAllentown, PA - With a 3-0 victory at Cedar Crest College on Saturday afternoon, the Highlanders have secured their spot in the 2014 CSAC women's volleyball playoffs. Brigid Shehan led the way for the Highlanders with 14 kills and Kelsey Johnson picked up 23 digs in the match to lead the defense.
Cairn will host Immaculata University on Tuesday as the fourth seed in the CSAC standings. The Highlanders' overall record improved to 12-17 as they ended a recent three-game slide.
Cairn won the first set handily at 25-12 but faced more pressure in the second set. The Falcons hit 16 total kills in the middle stanza but the Highlanders edged them out in the end and won 25-23. The Highlanders found their rhythm once again in the third and finished off the match 25-15.
On the offense, Cairn led Cedar Crest in total kills by one, 28-27, and also had one fewer attacking error. Cedar Crest's Rebecca Grady led all players in kills with 16. Sami Delfino collected 24 assists in the match; her opposition, Celina Danish, had 19.
The Highlanders held the edge in the match when it came to defense as well as committing less errors. Their 90 digs overall kept the ball in play and forced the Falcons to commit 33 total errors.
Shehan's 14 kills put her over the 300 mark for the season, which is her second time doing so in her four-year career. She has hit 3.16 kills per set this year for a .244 attacking percentage. With her 15 digs, she also crossed 400 digs for 2014.
Cairn's CSAC record was elevated to 7-4 with the win, while Cedar Crest dropped to 3-8 in the conference. The Highlanders' record ties Immaculata's but Cairn won the regular season matchup and became the fourth seed. Game time is yet to be announced for Tuesday.
