Box Score 2 Box Score Game 1 | Box Score Game 2Langhorne, PA - After winning their fourth straight game in straight sets against the University of Valley Forge in the first game, the Highlanders lost 3-1 to the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday evening. Kate Steger collected 13 kills against Valley Forge and another 18 against Lancaster Bible. Sam Delfino assisted on a total of 67 plays between the two matches.
The Highlanders dominated the offensive side of the court against the Patriots and ended the game with a team attack percentage of .359. Cairn also held Valley Forge to a -.055 attack percentage to put in a strong defensive effort.
Cairn jumped ahead to a 10-5 lead in the first set and never looked back as they eventually increased their lead to 13 by the end. Throughout the second set, the Highlanders kept a steady five-point lead until they stretched their lead to 10 at 24-14.
There was no denying who the victor would be in this matchup when the Highlanders quickly dispatched the Patriots in set three with another 25-12 score.
"I loved the team's consistency against Valley Forge," said head coach Ben Fuller after the match. "They were very level-headed and focused on the next point in between plays."
Lancaster Bible proved to be much more of a challenge for Cairn when they played in the third game of the tri-match. Valley Forge was defeated by Lancaster Bible in straight sets during the neutral matchup.
The first set was played virtually point-for-point with the lead being exchanged multiple times between the teams. The Highlanders rattled off a five point spread to take the lead 14-12 but the Chargers took the lead back at 15-14 and didn't give it up for the remainder of the set. Lancaster Bible took advantage of a 5-1 run to end the set at 25-20.
Both teams had some long runs in set number two but Lancaster Bible had the longest with nine, which ended the set at 25-11.
The Highlanders looked ready to mount a comeback when they took a 19-14 lead in set three. Steger aided in that run with three straight kills followed by a solo block. Cairn finished off the set on a four point run and had the momentum.
Unfortunately Cairn just couldn't find their rhythm throughout the fourth set didn't get the lead away from Lancaster Bible. The Chargers finished off the match with a 25-13 score in the final set. The Chargers' Katie Coomber finished the match with 22 kills and Hannah Derr collected 42 assists.
With the 1-1 record on the day, Cairn moves to 8-12 overall this season. Lancaster Bible improves to 13-8 overall, while Valley Forge drops their record to 10-9 on the season. The next game for the Highlanders will come this Saturday when they travel to Baptist Bible College to play at 11 a.m.
