Highlanders Drop Thriller At Delaware Valley 3-2

Doylestown, PA - Cairn University women's volleyball were edged out by Delaware Valley College tonight in a five-set thriller, 3-2. The Highlanders won the first and fourth sets of the match - both of which by six points or more.

The Highlanders' stat sheet was led by Brigid Shehan with 12 kills and was closely followed by Whitney Seidel and Kate Steger with 11 each. Sam Delfino collected 31 assists and Steger led the team in digs with 19.

At the end of the first set, up 19-18, the Highlanders won six of the last seven points to win 25-19. Overall, Cairn had a higher attacking percentage with .206 versus a .133 for the Aggies. For Delaware Valley, this was their first win since the end of September when they beat Centenary 3-0.

Delaware Valley won the second set 26-24 after a back-and-forth set that could have gone either way. The Aggies then rode the momentum of the close win and took the third set 25-20 and led the whole way.

Cairn rallied back into the match in the fourth set and jumped out to a 19-8 lead. The Highlanders finished out the set quickly with a 25-13 final, setting up only their second five-set match this season. The Aggies were 1-3 this season when the match went to a fifth set.

The Highlanders were in a good spot when they won three points in a row and went up 9-7. However, the Aggies scored eight out of the last nine points of the set to take it 15-10.

Cairn dropped to 8-14 overall with the loss, while Delaware Valley improved to 4-16 with the win. The Highlanders will travel to Gwynedd Mercy College tomorrow evening, Oct. 14, to take on the Griffins at 7 p.m.
