Highlanders Race Past Gwynedd Mercy, 3-0

Box Score Langhorne, PA - Cairn University's women's volleyball team never trailed on Thursday night in their Colonial States Athletic Conference match up with Gwynedd Mercy University, sweeping the Griffins 3-0.

Box Score

Senior Emily Mayer found a rythym early in the first set, setting the pace for the Highlanders attack, as the middle hitter had a game-high 10 kills. After an initial tie of 1-1, the Lady Highlanders broke things open with a 10-3 run and never looked back. The Crimson took the first set 25-10.

Likewise, the ladies took the second set with a similar score, 25-10. It took a bit more work, however, early on to separate themselves from the host. Cairn and Gwynedd battled to a 6-5 score, with the Highlanders ahead by a point until kills by three different Highlanders and two ball handling errors by the Griffins gave Cairn some breathing room, allowing them to jump to a 12-5 lead. Shortly after that run, the ladies would put together a 6-0 run and 5-0 run to outscore the Griffins 11-2 down the back stretch.

Searching for the sweep, the Highlanders raced out of the third set, 9-1. It was another streak by the team and not of individuals, with three different Highlanders registering kills on the run. Eventually, Cairn cruised to a 25-14 win and sweep of their CSAC opponents.

Brigid Shehan and Nicole Spicer each finished with 7 kills. Erin Greenwood had 25 assists. Ashleigh Colomina tallied a team-high 10 digs. Rachel Johnson recorded a block assist on the night, pushing her to within three shy of 100 total blocks for her career at Cairn.

The win pushes Cairn one step closer to another playoff berth in the CSAC. The ladies are now 15-5 on the season and have only lost once in conference play thus far, boasting a 5-1 CSAC record.

The ladies host Cedar Crest College this Saturday for an 11am start. Cairn won last season's meeting 3-0 in Allentown, PA.
