WVB: Shehan Earns All-Tournament Over the Weekend

Owings Mills, MD - The women's volleyball travelled south to Maryland to take part in the Stevenson University Invitational. The squad rebounded from two early defeats to finish the weekend 1-2. Sophomore Brigid Shehan (Media, PA / Penncrest) earned her way on to the All-Tournament team before all was said and done.

In the opening game, the Highlanders faced host Stevenson University and, unfortunately, couldn't continue the momentum from the previous to matches earlier in the week. The Mustangs proved too much taking the contest 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-21). Sophomores Abbie Keating (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) and Rachel Johnson (Vaughn, WA / Burley Christian) paced the Highlanders with 6 kills each, while junior Ashleigh Colomina (Allen Park, MI / Inter-City Baptist) had her hands full defensively, coming up with 15 digs. Shehan came up with 13 digs.

Game two on the day was a closer contest, but the Highlanders dropped  a 3-1 decision to the University of Mary Washington after taking the first set 25-20. Mary Washington rallied to squeak out three straight set wins, the third win coming in extra points, 26-24. The second and third sets finished 25-17, 25-20 respectively. Brigid Shehan got her offensive magic working with 10 kills while still contributing 11 digs on defense. Junior Erin Greenwood (Springfield, OH / Shawnee) had a team-high 15 digs while contributing 26 assists. She had 17 against Stevenson. Keating and Emily Mayer (Red Hill, PA / Faith Christian) each tallied 7 kills, but no one on Cairn could match UMW's Kayla Crawford's total of 15 kills.

Determined not to leave the tournament without a win, the Highlanders came out firing against Ursinus in the days final match. The first set finished in a convincing 25-13 victory for Cairn. While Ursinus tried to turn up the pressure in the final two sets, Cairn's ladies took care of business closing out the Bears, 25-18, 25-18; finishing the weekend with a 3-0 sweep. Rachel Johnson had 9 kills, followed by Shehan's 8. Greenwood, usually the provider, took her opportunities at the net slamming home 6 kills to go with her 24 set ups. Greenwood and Shehan were once again solid on the defensive end, turning in 14 and 12 digs.

The host Stevenson University were crowned champions after going 3-0 on the day.

For her exploits on offense and defense, Brigid Shehan was named to the All-Tournament team. She finished the day with 22 kills and 36 digs.
