Aston, PA - On Saturday, Cairn's women's volleyball team played both Neumann and Frostburg St. University.
In the opening match, Cairn dropped a 3-0 decision to conference foe Neumann University. The Highlanders were competitive throughout but unable to make a breakthrough. The Knights won 25-18, 25-19, 25-12.
Rachel Johnson paced the Highlanders with 10 kills, but it was the near flawless Neumann attack that sealed the deal. The Knights only committed 6 attacking errors on 73 total attacks.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Highlanders squared off with Frostburg St. The Highlanders broke out to a convincing 2-0 (25-18, 25-10) lead before Frostburg responded with a 25-20 win in the third set. But that's as close as they would get as Cairn would close things up in the 4th set, taking it 25-20.
With a spread offense, three Highlanders recorded 9 kills or more.
Brigid Shehan led all Highlanders with 11 kills, followed by
Emily Mayer notched the 10 kills mark. Usually the one setting things up, Erin Greenwood came up with 9 kills of her own, in addition to her 33 assists. Both
Katie Toewe and
Ashleigh Colomina contributed 21 digs to the defensive cause.
After both matches, Cairn sits at 12-7, but the loss to Neumann gives Cairn their first conference loss of the season. The Highlanders are now 2-1 in CSAC play.
Cairn faces Marywood this upcoming Wednesday at home. The match starts at 7pm. Marywood has knocked out the Highlanders in the CSAC playoffs the past two seasons.
