Highlanders Outgun Defenders

Langhorne, Pa - Cairn University's women's tennis team came away with a 7-2 victory over rivals Baptist Bible College.

Starting off with doubles play, Cairn and BBC split a match apiece early on. BBC's Dahlia Orth and Rachel Paris squeezed out an 8-6 victory over Emily Van Teyens and Hannah Maddox. It was the first time Maddox and Van Teyens had been paired together on the season. Cairn responded in the second match with long time doubles partners Meghan Whittington and Dana Hartman trumping Courtney Boger and Sharayah McMindes 8-3. Hartman and Whittington, both seniors, have been teammates since high school. Because the Defenders were missing two players, Cairn won the third doubles match by default, giving the Highlanders a 2-1 advantage going into singles play.

Only BBC's Courtney Boger prevented a sweep of head-to-head singles for the Highlanders, defeating Liana Jensen 6-1, 6-3. Hannah Maddox earned a win in the number one spot, 6-2, 6-4, versus Dahlia Orth. Dana Hartman got stronger as the game went on and claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win.

The match of the day had to be in the third singles battle. Senior Meghan Whittington fell behind 2-6 in the first set before storming back and carried a shutout the rest of the game; winning 2-6, 6-0, 6-0.

Again, missing two players, the Defenders were forced to conceed another two points by default giving the Highlanders a 7-2 victory. Without the default wins, Cairn held a 4-2 advantage.

Cairn will look to continue their winning ways this Saturday against Keystone College.
