Gwynedd Valley, PA - Taking on the defending Colonial States Athletic Conference champions is never an easy task, let alone in your season opener, but that was the challenge Cairn University faced to start their 2012 campaign.
Gwynedd-Mercy, the 4-time defending CSAC champions, took all nine possible points against the Highlanders but Cairn's third doubles team of senior
Tara Munro (Millsboro, DE / Delmarva Christian) and freshman
Emily Van Teyens (West Milford, NJ / West Milford) made the Griffins work for it. GMC wrapped up the first two double match-ups 8-0 each, but were forced to grind out a 9-7 victory in the third doubles spot.
The reigning tennis champions swept the singles spots with only Cairn's Tara Munro, once again, looking to play spoiler to the Griffins perfect day. After dropping the opening set 6-0, Munro forced a 10-game second set before finally succumbing to a 6-0, 6-4 defeat to GMC's Gabby Muller.
The Highlanders
Dana Hartman (Philadelphia, PA / Calvary Christian Academy) was the only player to take at least one game in each of her sets, losing 6-1, 6-2.
