Highlanders Shackled by Penn St.-Abington

Abington, PA - The women's tennis team made a fight of it but somehow came out on the losing end of a 0-9 score line against Penn St.-Abington on Monday.

After losing the previous two seasons to the Lions by the score of 4-5, the Lions made no doubt about the result this year, taking all nine possible points. Highlanders Coach Ken Wilson is still looking for that right combination in the singles line-up and doubles pairings early in the season, and there was some improvement and gelling going on.

Starting off with the doubles matches, Maddox, Hannah and Munro, Tara played aggressively, but came up short to Penn State's Jenny Abraham and Murinka 8-5. In the second doubles spot, Cairn's Hartman, Dana and Whittington, Meghan went the distance against Lori Phillips and Olga Popili, but somehow lost in a fierce tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-3).

After sweeping the doubles play, the Lions looked to seal the deal in the singles matchups. Although none came easy, Penn State took care of business taking all 6 battles. Maddox, in the number one spot, came closest to knocking off her opponent but fell 6-4, 7-5.
