Cairn-Marywood: Playoff Preview

Langhorne, PA - Cairn University and Marywood University will face-off in a Colonial States Athletic Conference First-Round Playoff match in women's volleyball tonight at 7pm.

Cairn University comes into tonight's playoff-off match, against the Marywood Pacers, as the #4 seed. The Pacers are the #5 seed. These two teams are no stranger to each other. Apart from playing each other every season during the regular season, Cairn and Marywood have met in the CSAC playoffs for three straight years (Cairn has only been in the CSAC for four years). This will mark the fourth straight playoff meeting. Since joining the CSAC, the Highlanders hold a slight 3-2 advantage in regular season matches. Marywood, however, holds a 2-1 lead in playoff meetings. In 2010 and 2011, Marywood has knocked out the Highlanders in the 1st round of the playoffs. It was 2009 when the Highlanders last topped the Pacers in post-season play. So far, it's the only triumph over Marywood in post-season play.

Back on October 3, the Highlanders toppled the Pacers 3-1 in front of a wild home crowd. The Highlanders will once again have the home-court advantage. Emily Mayer exploded for 18 kills and commited only 1 attack error. She finished with an impressive .531 hitting percentage from the inside hitter position. Erin Greenwood assisted 42 kills. Brigid Shehan turned up for 11 kills and a team-leading 23 dig performance.

Ashley Zalewski was the main threat for the Pacers, collecting 13 kills on that day. Kelly Chadwick earned 37 assists.

The match started with a 25-23 Marywood win in the opening set before the Highlanders squeeked out 25-31, 25-21 victories in the second and third set. With momentum and the crowd on their side, Cairn strolled to a 25-14 win in the fourth set, winning the match 3-1.

Cairn enters tonight's match 21-11 overall and 8-3 in conference play. Marywood is 6-5 in league play, 13-11 overall.
