LANGHORNE, PA - The women's tennis team was on a roll heading into Tuesday's match with Lancaster Bible College, having won their two opening matches of the year in convincing fashion.
Unfortunately, a third straight triumph wasn't in the cards as the Chargers thwarted PBU's short winning streak Tuesday afternoon, downing the Crimson Eagles by a final margin of 6-3.
"Yeah, it was a disappointing loss," said head coach Ken Wilson at the conclusion of the match. "But even in the disappointment of losing, I saw great effort and application of the things we've been working on both as a team and in the games of each individual player."
Nevertheless, the Crimson Eagles couldn't quite produce the magic touch they had experienced as a group throughout their first two outings and began the afternoon winning just one of three matches during doubles action. Dana Hartman and Megan Whittington pulled out the lone tandem win, slipping past the LBC duo of Kayla Scott and Becky Griffes, 8-5.
Looking to make up some ground during singles play, the Crimson Eagles instead stole only two matches out of six, with Katelynn WIlson and Elizabeth Stafford securing the only individual triumphs on the afternoon. Wilson, who has yet to lose this year, won 3-6, 6-2, 10-7, while Stafford managed a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
"Elizabeth Stafford's game has escalated to new heights from last season," coach Wilson raved. "Also,Tara Munro was remarkable to watch in this evening's match; from her decisive first set win through to the deciding match tie break she played she truly gave her all - a coach could not ask for more."
Munro, who came into the match undefeated as well this year, dropped a disheartening 1-6, 6-4, 8-6 match to LBC's Michelle Ringler but garnered the high praise from her coach after a remarkable effort in the sixth solos spot.
"While we fell a little bit short today, I expect that it will help us in the long run with our overall growth as a team," Wilson predicted. "They are a close nit group and I believe a new resolve as been forged among our girls following today's loss."
"In fact, I believe this team can "run" with the best in our conference but we will have to be willing to stand up to the pressure of competition."
The Crimson Eagles will have an opportunity to do just that when the group kicks off conference action this Saturday in Clarks Summit, PA. PBU will open up their CSAC slate at 1:00 pm against Baptist Bible College.
