Stevenson Upends Crimson Eagles in Title Match

LANGHORNE, PA
- As the saying goes, the third times the charm. Unfortunately, that adage didn't hold true for the women's volleyball team on Saturday.

For the third straight season, Stevenson University captured the Crimson Eagle Classic gold trophy, upending the host squad in three sets en route to their ninth win of the year.

The Crimson Eagles waltzed into the championship match against the Mustangs by handling Rosemont College and Manhattanville College during the opening rounds with relative ease.

During their first CSAC contest of the year, PBU claimed a sweep over the Ravens, downing their counterpart by scores of 25-12, 25-9, 25-13. In match number two against Manhattanville, the Crimson Eagles triumphed 25-10, 25-13, 29-17, setting up for what has turned into an annual showdown between PBU and Stevenson in the title bout.

But any hope the Crimson Eagles had of overcoming their recent rival was quickly thwarted as the Mustangs dispatched the host group during a three game sweep, winning by scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-19.

Stevenson proved efficient on the offensive end, swinging at a .292 clip for the match while limiting PBU to an even .000 hitting percentage. Despite 14 service errors from the green and white, the Mustangs overcame their blunders by utilizing a 40-15 edge in total kills for the contest, forcing PBU into their lowest mark of the season.

Perhaps the lone true highlight of the match was Carly Plank's individual accomplishment as the senior outside hitter collected her 1,000th kill during the third frame.

Plank and sophomore Rachel Calderon were both named to the All-Tournament team, while Stevenson's Avery Gabbard picked up MVP awards.

PBU falls to 5-4 on the year following Saturday's events.

The Crimson Eagles will get back into action on Tuesday when the group hosts conference foe Marywood University in the Mason Activity Center at 7:00 pm.
