LANGHORNE, PA – Credit should be given where credit is due – hats of the Stevenson women’s volleyball team.
In what can be summed up as one of the most resilient performances a team could ever muster, the Mustangs somehow claimed the Crimson Eagle Classic title for the second year in a row.
Down and out time and time again, Stevenson fought back from a 2-0 hole to eventually claim the title in thrilling, dramatic, albeit stunning fashion. Behind 10-5 during the final rally, the visitors somehow closed out the game on an 11-4 run to steal what seemed to be a guaranteed PBU victory.
Stevenson snatched the title behind a .316 hitting clip in the final round, stuffing several Crimson Eagle kill attempts in clutch fashion that would even make MJ stand and give applause.
Despite the disappointment behind the loss, the Crimson Eagles nonetheless played an inspired match in the championship bout, standing their ground until the final moments of play. The group actually posted more kills (53-48) and more service aces (9-6) throughout the five game burner but were shackled by 21 service errors for the contest, a stat that figures to have played a crucial role in the final outcome.
Game scores from the contest finished 22-25, 27-29, 25-22, 25-20, 16-14.
Earlier in the day the Crimson Eagles cruised to wins over New Jersey City University (25-16, 25-14, 25-22) and Baruch College (25-21, 25-19, 12-25, 25-14) to advance the group to the final contest.
Rookie Rachel Calderon ended the day with 44 kills and 33 digs through the three match event. Kay Lynn Zeiset totaled 41 digs and 11 service aces, and Carly plank added 32 kills.
The Crimson Eagles will shift their focus to Arcadia University this Tuesday, taking on the Knights on the road at 7:00 pm.
