LANGHORNE, PA – It was a team effort all the way around.
Aided early on after being informed that Penn State Abington would be forced to forfeit two of nine matches (due to a lack of players), the women’s tennis team made sure to take full advantage of the extra crutch they were gifted.
In fact, it ended that the Crimson Eagles wouldn’t even need the lending hand as the group dusted off the Nittany Lions during a 7-2 showing Saturday afternoon. It marks PBU’s first win of the season for a group that won received just a single tally in the “W” column a year ago.
“I thought every position played well,” Crimson Eagle head coach Ken Wilson said after the match. “I was proud of our composure and thought that we really played like we were on a mission to win.”
Katelynn Wilson was one of the catalysts that helped fulfill that mission, dominating at in the top spot as the one seed during a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Elizabeth Stafford and Jocelyn Palmer both came up triumphant in singles play as well as Stafford won 6-1, 6-0 and Palmer rolled 6-1, 6-1 in the third singles position.
The tandem of Wilson and Hannah Maddox proved to be too much during an 8-3 win in doubles while Palmer and Stafford pulled off an 8-6 victory to seal the deal.
“I’m definitely happy with today’s outcome – our girls showed a lot of heart,” Wilson said.
The Crimson Eagles will go for two in a row this Tuesday against a group they dropped 7-2 a year ago, Lancaster Bible College. Game time against the Chargers is scheduled for 3:00 pm on the road.
