Crimson Eagles Fall in CSAC Championship

IMMACULATA, PA - Before the Crimson Eagles even stepped on the court on Saturday they had already made history as the first PBU team to ever reach a championship match in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. They weren't happy with just getting there though; they wanted to finish the job. It wasn't to be as top-seeded Cabrini swept the Crimson Eagles to win their first ever CSAC Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament next week.

Early on in the match, PBU jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first set and looked like they were well on their way to taking the all-important first round in the best-of-five match. However, the Cavaliers called time out and promptly went on a 6-0 run to close the gap and blew past the Crimson Eagles to take the first set, 25-17. Although they hung with Cabrini from there on out, PBU never quite recovered against the conference's best team and lost sets two and three 21-25 and 20-25, respectively.

The seniors led PBU as Betsy Ranck registered 22 assists while Kay Lynn Zeiset had four aces and 11 digs. Carly Plank led the team in kills with 7.

For Cabrini, senior Lizzie Williams was named the match’s most valuable player, collecting a match-high 29 assists. Williams also added eight kills and five digs. Freshman Megan Ryan was dominate for the Cavaliers’, recording 11 kills on 23 attempts with just one error. Junior Stephanie Recklau tallied nine kills on 18 tries, also with only one error.

The Crimson Eagles now turn their attention back to NCCAA play as they head to Florida for the NCCAA National Tournament, where they are seeded ninth out of ten teams. Their schedule kicks off with a match against number one seed Lincoln Christian University on Thursday at 12 noon at the Kissimmee Civic Center. They will then play Trinity College (FL) at 4:00 p.m. that afternoon. For more tournament information click here.
