Langhorne, PA - On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Cairn Highlanders' Athletic Department and baseball team hosted the Bucks County Special Olympics in a pair of exhibition soccer games. While, the Highlanders fell on the field, everyone was a winner on an afternoon filled with laughter, fun, smiles, and celebrations.

The Bucks County Special Olympics program is home to more than 1,000 athletes that compete in a wide variety of sports that include, Running, Bocce, Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball, Flag Football and many more. These athletes compete in local exhibitions and contests before moving on to district and state competitions.

Sunday afternoon's contests were the first of their kind hosted by the Cairn Athletic Department. Over 25 athletes were in attendance to take on the Highlanders. Already on the calendar are flag football scrimmages against the Bucks County Special Olympics on Oct. 8.

Part of the mission of Cairn University and the Athletic Department is to make an impact in the local community and these events hosting the Special Olympics are a small part toward achieving this mission.

"It was so great to see our team really enjoying themselves with the guys," said Cairn head baseball coach Phill Shallenberger after the afternoon of soccer. "It's awesome to see our guys making an impact in the community, representing not only the baseball program but Cairn (University) as a whole.

"One of our team goals is to reach out into the community and do some service for the local area. Today was an example of what that looks like and I'm excited to continue that throughout the year."

As mentioned the Highlanders will host Bucks County Special Olympics on Oct. 8 in flag football scrimmages.
