Box Score
Brooklyn, NY - Cairn University's men's soccer team rolled 6-1 over The King's College in their season opener, starting their season off with a win for the first time since 2006.
Five different players scored for the Highlanders, with sophomore Caleb Moore leading the way with a brace and has already matched his season total from a year ago.
Things, however, did not start off to plan for fourth year coach Scott Fogarty and the Crimson. In the sixth minute, the Highlanders found themselves behind a goal after some slack defending and a gratuitous giveaway. Falling behind seemed to wake the team up as Cairn responded almost immediately. Three minutes laters, Moore found himself rounding the keeper inside the six yard box after some heavy pressing by the Highlanders to knot the score at 1-1.
Moore scored the go-ahead goal in just the 12th minute, one-timing his shot into the upper corner off of a cross from senior Cody Mosely. Before the half was over, Cairn made the most of a set-piece just outside of the box as sophomore Andrew "Commissioner" Gordon scored a looping header to the far-post over the King's goalkeeper, notching his first collegiate goal and putting the Highlanders up 3-1.
Cairn controlled the second stanza with long spells in possession and being selective in their attacks, which paid off in the 62nd minute when Mosely scored his first goal of the season with a rip near the endline, surprising the goalkeeper and sneaking in near-post.
In the 72nd minute, freshman Corey Nolan scored his first collegiate goal to put Cairn up 5-1. Nolan reacted quickest to a rebound around six yards out for his tally.
The scoring would be complete in the 82nd minute when sophomore Andrew Milcarek put his direct free-kick into the side net on the far-post.
The Highlanders outshot King's 33 to 6.
Senior David Shaffer and freshman Mark Heater combined for the Highlanders in net to earn the win.
Cairn starts the season off 1-0. They will return to action next weekend when they take part in the Rutgers-Camden Ciallela Classic where they will face-off against Arcadia University and Eastern Mennonite. Cairn took second place in last years Ciallela Classic behind Rutgers-Camden and ahead of Arcadia and St. Joseph's-Long Island.
